Marketing is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.”

In simple terms, marketing refers to talking about your product or service enough to get people interested to buy from you.

Every money-making venture has a purpose of making money, and you can’t make money until you have customers.

Marketing’s purpose is to assist you in obtaining these customers. However, we all know that as a small business owner, you might not have a marketing budget. So, what do you do? Do you allow your business to fail? Certainly not.

  1. Do one-on-one marketing

This is a marketing technique that necessitates personal contact with potential customers. It’s a lot more than you might think. You may need to use strategies like sending special birthday emails to your prospects, sending handwritten holiday greetings, cards, and more.  This type of marketing builds potential clients’ trust and loyalty.

2. Create a referral program for your customers

Customers who refer their friends to you can get a free service/product or a discount on their next purchase. The trick is to make the prize too good to pass up. Your customers will then actively tell others about your business.

3. Participate in a charity event by volunteering

Charity events are an excellent way to promote your business. Do you know of any upcoming charity events in your area? Offer to assist with organization, handle some tasks, or provide materials that may be required for the event’s success.

4. Build a presence on social media

This is one of my favorites. Social media isn’t just for catching up with pals and laughing at memes anymore. Because of the high number of people on social media, businesses can target consumers where they already are and want to hang out online.

How much time do you spend on Instagram or Tiktok with your friends? Consider it from a business standpoint. Wouldn’t it be free marketing for you if all of those people saw your posts or videos at least once a day?

One of the most cost-effective ways to promote your brand is through social media marketing, but you must be willing to put in the effort.

5. Participate in conferences

Although most conferences are not free, you should be able to discover several that are reasonably priced. Make sure to attend conferences that are relevant to your industry when deciding which ones to attend.

These conferences allow you to network with other industry professionals and, as a result, get you and your company noticed.

6. Share data milestones

People can quickly process numbers because they provide a measure of a company’s performance. You may, for example, declare the number of satisfied customers, products sold, or a social media follower milestone.

People care about your business, believe it or not, and they will be delighted to watch you progress to the next level.

Milestones demonstrate progress, and prospects who see snippets of your journey are more likely to work with you.

7. Distribute free samples

There will be individuals that are interested in buying from you but are hesitant. Offering a free trial of your services might be an excellent method to persuade potential clients that they need your services.

8. Organize a masterclass or a webinar

These are online sessions in which you teach attendees something useful that they’ve been wanting to learn for a long time.  What do you use to decide what to teach?

Such groups and organizations are excellent for meeting like-minded people and exposing your business to someone who might refer you to a potential client.

Marketers, doctors, engineers, traders, manufacturers, and a variety of other professions have their own associations. Find one that is a good fit for your business and start networking.

10. Write a guest blog post

Look for opportunities to write articles for well-known blogs in your field if you’re a great writer. Entrepreneur, Forbes, and Business Insider, for example, are some of the most popular business blogs that accept guest contributions.

You may not be accepted as a guest writer for these particular ones because they are already established, but if you want to build a name as a business expert, do some research on other blogs that accept guest contributions.

Almost every topic in the world has a blog. Pitch your blog post idea to a relatively well-known blog in your niche and see what happens. 


Running a business is difficult, especially as a sole proprietor. In order for your business to succeed, you’ll have to wear multiple hats. At the same time, you’ll be the marketer, content creator, accountant, and manager. Your attitude is one factor that will decide your success.
